Mission Viejo Auto Collision hosted another day of Pinewood Derby Racing with the Boys Scouts of Orange County on February 23rd, 2014. This time Pack 703 brought their well-crafted pinewood cars, and their game to the races. All racers with their families and friends came to witness the exciting afternoon of fiercely competitive racing. You can experience the race from the event video below.

The judges and staff took their roles seriously, ensuring that all the lasers, timer and software were working properly to accurately record each race. To minimize error, a state of the art, dual laser beam system was used to trigger the time recording of each car as it crossed the start and finish lines. The time for each car was measured down to 1/10000th of a second, and the software used calculated the speed in miles per hour for a race track distance of 29 feet. Depending on how many cars were in each heat, each car was raced on each lane of the track, and the average race time was determined over the total amount of lanes used. It’s amazing that these engineless cars using just the force of gravity can travel up to 160 MPH.

There were lots of ingenuity in the development of these cars as 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies were given out for three categories: design (appearance), workmanship (sturdiness), and performance (speed). It’s obvious that there were countless promising young engineers being groomed from these races. We may have uncovered the next Henry Ford to spearhead future ecofriendly cars that are lightweight, durable and run on alternative fuels.
